Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) was established under the name of East Pakistan Agricultural Development Corporation by the Agricultural Development Corporation Ordinance, 1961 (E.P. Ordinance XXXVII, 1961). As it was considered different in terms of its activities from other development institutions of the agricultural sector of the government, BADC was renamed as Bangladesh Agricultural Input Supply and Services Corporation (BAISSC) in 1975. But in 1976, BAISSC was again renamed and 'BADC' was reinstated. As an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Agriculture, BADC is based in Dhaka city but its service scope is spread all over Bangladesh. Field level offices are up to the Upazila level; in some cases, there is a wide network of offices in more remote areas.

The general and administrative direction of the corporation and the decision-making power on other matters are vested in the Board of Directors headed by the Chairman. The organizational structure of the corporation consists of 5 wings. These are: Administration, Finance, Seeds and Horticulture, Micro Irrigation and Fertilizer Management.

The basic tasks assigned to BADC are to ensure sustainable production, procurement (purchase), transportation, storage, distribution management of agricultural inputs throughout Bangladesh and to create irrigation opportunities for farmers through the supply of essential agricultural inputs such as seeds, fertilizers and the use of surface and groundwater.

Professionals from various professions such as agriculture, engineering, economics, management, etc. are working together in BADC. The total number of sanctioned posts was 25,451. However, in the early 1990s, the manpower decreased due to the withdrawal of fertilizer management activities from BADC, privatization of irrigation activities and natural and voluntary retirement.

The corporation was restructured in 1999 through a gazette notification (published in Bangladesh Gazette on November 22, 1999) and some new activities were provided on quality seed production and irrigation. BADC provided financial assistance through new projects and programs to create opportunities for using surface water for irrigation, import fertilizer through G2G system, strengthen seed production activities, including seed multiplication of high-yielding varieties and increasing the production of various types of adverse tolerant varieties.
